Church Music Corner › Concert: In the Midst of Life [loc-003R]

This is a special edition of Church Music Corner where I share the programme for our Lenten Concert, In the Midst of Life, that happened today at All Saints Ainslie.

The concert opened with some lovely piano playing by Lynda Tooth followed by Gibbons' Drop, Drop Slow Tears. Then we sang some music from the English renaissance: Farrant's Call to Remembrance, Morley's Nolo Mortem Peccatoris, the Agnus Dei from Byrd's Mass for Four Voices, and Tallis' Hear the Voice and Prayer. Then, to give us a break, Lynda played variations on the theme of Amazing Grace on the piano, followed by the more dramatic fare of the concert: Anerio's Christus factus est, Victoria's O vos omnes, Purcell's Funeral Sentences for Queen Mary (from which the title of the concert is drawn), Attwood's Turn thy Face with Dan Walker singing the solo section, Goss' O Saviour of the World, Stainer's God So Loved the World and finally Lloyd's View me, Lord. For an encore we sang the Nunc Dimittis from Gibbons' Short Service.

The concert was quite well attended and raised some much needed funds for the music of the church. We got a lot of positive feedback, I think the concert went very well. Thanks especially to our guest singers, Dan Walker and Patrick Baker!
